Program helps veterans, families transition to civilian life

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – There’s a new program designed to help veterans and their families transition into civilian life after service.

It’s called Next Move New York, and it can be found at an office at 124 Franklin Street in Watertown.

A program official will work to understand people’s needs and find work or leadership roles they might be qualified for in the community.

Program officials say they’ve already received several questionnaire responses from current service members potentially interested in the program.

Ben Cruz, a veteran, is the program administrator.

“The closer we get to that retirement date, or the closer we get to ETS out of the military, you start getting this fear of the unknown and that anxiety,” he said. “What we try to do is to cover that gap, that fear of the unknown or anxiety for the service member, military spouse, or veteran with intent that they feel a sense of community which is second to none in the North Country.”

The program is through the Development Authority of the North Country and is funded by a state grant.
