Chipmaking Facility to Bring 50k High-Tech Jobs to the North Country

Chipmaking giant Micron broke ground on a $100B facility in Clay, NY in January. This historic investment in New York represents a tremendous opportunity for transitioning Soldiers, military spouses and veterans.

On Tuesday August 25, the Governor’s Office of Semiconductor Expansion, Management and Integration (GO-SEMI) hosted “Chips & Bricks: Building Regional Opportunities” in Syracuse to facilitate one-to-one networking between local companies and Micron project leaders for supply chain and subcontracting opportunities. The GO-SEMI initiative is focused on bringing semiconductor manufacturing and innovation to upstate New York. They project that by 2030, one in four American-made chips will be manufactured in and around upstate New York—more than any other region in the U.S.

Next Move NY’s Joanna Brislan and Sarah Wilder attended the event, connecting with representatives from Bechtel, the primary construction partner for Micron’s chipmaking “megafab” facility in Clay. Next Move NY is very excited to partner with Bechtel to help fill developing labor market demands as New York embraces this leading-edge computer chip manufacturer.

Micron is expected to generate 50,000 New York jobs and over 4,500 construction jobs here during the peak of construction, creating opportunities for the union trades, apprenticeships, and local training program graduates. In addition to jobs created directly in support of the Micron megafab, GO-SEMI also plans to invest in suppliers that are part of the chipmaker’s supply chain as well as additional Micron facilities after the megafab is completed.

The opportunities for transitioning Soldiers, military spouses and veterans will include new educational and workforce development pipelines supported by GO-SEMI. The Next Move NY will continue to connect our community with these opportunities as they become available.
