How The White House Military Spouse Commission Complements Next Move NY’s Mission

I’m hopeful that the newly established Military Spouse Commission will provide an important opportunity to elevate the voice and experiences of military spouses across all branches, ranks, and duty stations.

As a military spouse of 22 years, I have seen firsthand the unique challenges, sacrifices, and contributions of military spouses, and I believe our perspectives are essential to shaping meaningful policies and support for military families. Too often, military spouses feel that their concerns are not fully heard or understood when decisions are made about issues that directly affect our lives. The Commission has a unique opportunity to listen to those experiences and bring them to the attention of leaders who are in positions to help identify meaningful, lasting solutions.

There are many challenges that are shared by military spouses regardless of rank or branch, including employment, healthcare, childcare, housing, and the challenges associated with frequent PCS moves. Just as importantly, military spouses often have to navigate the challenge of building a sense of community and belonging while living far from family and established support systems.

There are valuable resources available at some duty stations. Here at Fort Drum, for example, spouses have access to programs such as Next Move NY – Live Love Stay, which helps families become familiar with and connected to the region, as well as Next Move NY, which assists with military spouse employment opportunities. These are wonderful examples of community partnerships that can make a meaningful difference, but similar resources are not available at every installation.

I hope the Military Spouse Commission examines both the challenges that military spouses face universally and the successful programs already making a difference in individual communities. By listening directly to spouses and learning from what works, the Commission has an opportunity to help ensure that military families have the support, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive — regardless of where military service takes them. Ultimately, investing in the well-being of military spouses and children is also an investment in the service members themselves. When families have greater stability, access to meaningful employment and reliable childcare, confidence in their healthcare and housing, and a stronger sense of community and support, service members are better positioned to focus on the missions they are entrusted to accomplish. Meaningful improvement in quality of life can also strengthen military family resilience and may contribute to service members choosing to remain in military service.

Supporting military families, therefore, is not simply about improving the experience of spouses and children — it is an important part of supporting the readiness, effectiveness, and long-term strength of our military as a whole.
